On Friday the 13th Buzz Wagner, the Director of Research for the Chamber of Commerce in Key West, headed out to the
Atocha wreck site with his long time friend Bill Carroll. Bill flew in all the way from Philadelphia, PA to
experience this once in a lifetime opportunity. Buzz’s sincere interest and excitement about Mel Fisher’s
operation lead him to bid on the trip during the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society’s Radio Auction. Lucky for
him his was the winning bid and his generosity enabled him to do what few are able to do; dive on the most famous
shipwreck site in history. Buzz brought his underwater camera along and was able to get some shots of divers and
investors underwater, but we were also able to get some shots of Buzz and Bill so they’ll be able to look back and
remember this amazing opportunity. As we were leaving the wreck site and the J.B. Magruder got farther in the
distance Buzz said “I can’t see it anymore! Now it’s just a memory.” We’re happy they had such a great time even
though we didn’t find any treasure but as Mel would say, “Today’s the Day!”
