In December of 1992, world famous treasure hunter, Mel Fisher, opened a permanent museum in Sebastian, Florida.
Mel started his full-time treasure hunting career back in 1963, in Vero Beach. He moved there from California with his wife Dolores and their four children- sons Dirk, Kim, Kane, and daughter Taffi.
Mel spent the next 6 years successfully salvaging the 1715 Fleet, a fleet of sunken treasure-laden ships that sank off the coast near Vero Beach, which is why the surrounding area got the name, "Florida's Treasure Coast".
He then moved to the Florida Keys, and spent 16 years searching for, and discovering the main pile of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha in July of 1985.
This is still considered the largest underwater treasure find in history.
The Fisher Family is today onto the third generation carrying on the search for the remaining cargo of the Atocha, and her sister ship the Santa Margarita. Over $400 million dollars in registered treasure, and an estimated $500 million in smuggled emeralds remains to be found. Visit the Mel Fisher Treasure Museum and dive into history. Come view our newest treasure, a spectacular mural by artist Katherine Larson “Legacy of the Treasure Coast!” The mural was painted over three months in the artist's studio on a poly fiber material and installed at the site with a special adhesive. The images tell the story of the 1715 Spanish Fleet that sank in the Treasure Coast area and how the recovery of the treasure from these ships continues today. Take advantage of the opportunity to pose with the handsome conquistador or by using the hanging vintage key to try and unlock the trunk full of treasure.
